Chocolate Digestive Biscuits

Who doesn’t love a good digestive biscuit? They’re crunchy, slightly sweet, and just perfect with a cup of tea. But what if we took this classic treat up a notch? Imagine a biscuit with a rich cocoa flavour, a hint of spice, and a glossy coat of dark chocolate to make it even more irresistible. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it?

Well, that’s exactly what we’re making today! These eggless Chocolate Digestive Biscuits are packed with goodness—wholewheat flour for that extra fibre, jaggery for a touch of natural sweetness, and a beautiful mix of spices that will remind you of your favourite chai masala. Add a little zing with orange zest and a coating of dark chocolate, and you have the perfect snack that’s both indulgent and wholesome.

The best part? These biscuits are super easy to make and don’t need any fancy ingredients. You can whip them up with things you probably already have in your kitchen, and the result? A biscuit that’s crunchy, chocolaty, and full of flavour in every bite.

The combination of wholewheat flour and jaggery makes these biscuits not only tasty but also a little healthier than your average biscuit. And the spices? Well, that’s where the magic happens! Fresh ginger, cinnamon, and cloves give a warm, fragrant kick to the dough, while orange zest adds a fresh citrusy zing that balances out the richness of the cocoa and chocolate.

Whether you’re craving something sweet to pair with your evening tea or looking for a treat to enjoy during a cozy movie night, these biscuits are perfect. They’re a great way to surprise your friends and family with something familiar yet totally unique.

The final touch? The dark chocolate coating. It’s the perfect way to add that extra layer of decadence, without overwhelming the spices and jaggery. You’ll be left with a biscuit that’s not just a snack, but an experience!

Ingredients

1 cup (130 g) - Wholewheat Flour

1 cup (110 g) - Oat flour/Oats

1/4 cup (25 g) - Cocoa Powder

3/4 cup (100 g) - Powdered Jaggery

100g - Unsalted Butter/Ghee

1/2 tsp - Ground Cinnamon

1/4 tsp - Ground Cloves

1/4 tsp - Salt

1 tsp - Baking Soda

1/4 tsp - Baking Powder

Zest of 1 Orange

1 tsp - Grated Ginger

80g - Dark Chocolate

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl take the wholewheat flour,  oat flour (you can grind 1 cup of oats into a fine powder at home too), 1/4 cup cocoa powder, ground cinnamon, ground clove, baking soda, baking powder, salt, orange zest, grated ginger and give it all a thorough mix.
  2. Now add the cold butter that is cut into small cubes. You can also use ghee here. Rubbing with the fingers, incorporate the butter with the flour until it is evenly mixed in.
  3. Add the milk and mixing gently until an even dough forms. Do not knead the dough. Just press it firmly with hands until it comes together in one mass.
  4. Now place the dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll it out into a thin sheet, around 3mm in thickness.
  5. Using a round cookie cutter, cut out round cookies. You can make them a few different shapes and sizes. To keep things simple, you can cut them into rectangles or squares too.
  6. Place the cut cookies in a parchment lined baking sheet and bake them in a preheated oven at 180 C for 15-20 mins depending on your oven.
  7. Take them out on a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. While the cookies are cooking, take the dark chocolate and melt it in a microwave or double boiler.
  9. Once the cookies have cooled to room temperature, gently dip one side or one edge of the cookie into melted chocolate. Place it on a wire rack or parchment paper to cool until the chocolate sets.
  10. Store the cookies in an airtight container for upto 3 weeks.

Notes

  1. You can grind rolled oats or instant oats into a fine powder at home for this recipe.
  2. Do not knead the dough. It will make the cookies tough. Just press the dough firmly with your hands until it comes together as one mass.
